Digital Prototypes

After a few Loops with Paper Prototypes, you’ll want to create a Digital Prototype (some people call them “clickable prototypes”) so you can make it look more like a real product and test with more people. This takes significantly more work than whiteboarding or Paper Prototypes, so don’t start creating Digital Prototypes until you’re pretty confident you’re on the right track.

A great tool to start creating Digital Prototypes is Axure (www.axure.com). It’s a powerful tool that allows you to quickly get elements on a screen and publish to a website where other people can see it and play with it. The basics are pretty simple. It comes with UI elements like boxes, buttons, headings, text, and form fields. You can just drag them onto the screen in the position you want and click Publish. You can create actions on various elements to simulate your workflow, like clicking navigation links to go to different screens, clicking buttons to perform tasks, and more. It’s a great way to build a simulated workflow and test with real people.

When you’re ready to make something that looks and feels even more like a real product, tools like InVision, Figma, Framer, and Proto.io are all great. Tools like this make it easy to create rich visual interfaces that look and act like a live working product.

There is a lot more to using these tools. Healthy design organizations of all sizes have them at the very center of their process, which we’ll get into again in the last section of this book.
